Exploring the Possibility of Enhancing Urban Economic Resilience Through Regional Intercity Innovation Network Embeddedness: Evidence from Yangtze River Delta Region of China

  • Abstract: Innovation networks play a crucial role in facilitating the diffusion of innovation factors and the sharing and integration of innovation resources among cities. Although prior research has linked intercity innovation networks to innovation capacity and economic growth, whether they contribute to urban economic resilience remains underexplored. By integrating the perspective of network embeddedness with urban economic resilience research, this study investigates how different dimensions of intercity innovation network embeddedness shape cities’ economic resilience under varying external conditions. Based on panel data for 41 prefecture-level and above cities in the Yangtze River Delta Region (YRDR) in China from 2004 to 2023, a two-way fixed-effects model was employed to estimate the effects of regional intercity innovation network embeddedness on urban economic resilience. The results reveal that: 1) both relational and structural embeddedness within the regional intercity innovation network significantly enhance urban economic resilience; 2) the resilience-enhancing effects of regional intercity innovation network embeddedness are weakened during major shocks; 3) the positive role of network embeddedness is more evident in low-tier cities than in high-tier cities. These findings highlight the role of intercity innovation network embeddedness in shaping urban economic resilience within highly integrated metropolitan regions and offer policy implications for strengthening urban economic resilience in similar regional contexts.
