With complex and diverse properties, the coastal zone is strongly affected by climate change and human activities. China’s coastal zone has a wide spatial span and great differences in natural environment and social-economic development, and therefore, it has been becoming a focus of academic research and policy management. Over the past few decades, a number of economic zones have been developed and formed on the basis of large estuaries and bays, such as Bohai Economic Rim, Yangtze River Delta Economic Zone, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (the Greater Bay Area), Beibu Gulf Economic Region, etc. Under such circumstance, it is of growing significance to monitor and assess coastal resources and environment.

Remote sensing can provide an important technical support for monitoring resource and environment change. This new Special Issue from Chinese Geographical Science, ‘Remote Sensing for Coastal Resources and Environment’ focuses on latest progress in remote sensing monitoring and assessment of resources and environment in coastal zone at multiple temporal and spatial scales. Therefore, this Special Issue is open to anyone conducting research in the field. Potential topics include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

● Remote sensing on coastal resources and environment

● Remote sensing on coastal ecosystem at multiple scales

● Remote sensing on ecosystem services in coastal zone

● Remote sensing on land-sea interactions in coastal zone

● Remote sensing on coastal disasters and coastal resilience

● Remote sensing on human activities and their effects in coastal zone

● Remote sensing of island, bay, estuarine delta, regional sea, etc.

● Remote sensing for SDGs in coastal zone
